POSITION DESCRIPTION
We seek a highly motivated Project Coordinator to join and support a multidisciplinary team leading an effort to scope one of two possible options for NASA's next Terrestrial Field Ecology Campaign, focused on the tropics. The position is full-time for one year.
This work will inform NASA's next decadal large-scale terrestrial field campaign and aims to improve our understanding of tropical ecosystems and their role in the Earth system. For context, ABoVE is the current NASA decadal campaign that is wrapping up. Our campaign, if selected, aims to build on the successes of the Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA) in the 1990s that resulted in major advancements in scientific understanding and capacity building.
The Project Coordinator will work closely with Professor Elsa Ordway at UCLA to coordinate regular working group meetings, engage with the broader research community, and manage scoping activity documentation and website updates. They will participate in the planning and execution of all scoping activities including Town Halls at conferences, webinars, and international site visits in South America and/or Central Africa. Additional responsibilities include supporting organization and prioritization of tasks and workflow, assisting in scheduling, and tracking project milestones and deliverables.
Throughout the scoping effort, the Project Coordinator will work with many partners, including at academic institutions, government agencies, non-profits, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).
We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive scoping effort and strongly encourage candidates from tropical forest countries and from underrepresented backgrounds to apply. The University of California seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or protected veteran status. Deadline: Review of applicants will start August 18 and continue until the position is filled.
Start date: September/October 2023 (somewhat flexible)
Location: The position is based at UCLA in Los Angeles, CA
